Venugopal Vuruputur has a B.Tech. from IIT Madras and an M.S and PhD from University of Minnesota, all in Civil Engineering. Following postdoc tenures at Centre for Ocean Land-Atmosphere Studies, Maryland and at University of Minnesota, he became a member of the faculty at the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, where he is currently an Associate Professor. Along with his students and collaborators, Venu has contributed extensively to characterising the multi-scale space-time structure of Indian monsoon and tropical rainfall. This includes quantifying changes in Indian monsoon extreme rainfall events, the universality of wet and dry spells of global tropical rainfall and identifying the role of midlatitudes in triggering Indian monsoon droughts in the absence of an El Nino. A recipient of the NASA Earth System Science Fellowship during his PhD, Venu was an Associate Editor of Water Resources Research (an AGU publication) during the period 2013-2017 and has been on the review editorial board of Frontiers in Atmospheric Sciences since 2016. Venu has also been a member of several national and regional committees relating to cloud seeding experiments in India, and is presently a member of the apex committee for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Karnataka.
