Dr Atul Kumar Varma, Scientist-G and Head, Atmospheric Sciences Division at Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad. He is having ~34 years of experience in the field of satellite remote sensing. He obtained his M.Sc. in Physics from Lucknow University (1984), M.Tech. in Atmospheric Sciences from IIT, Kharagpur (1986), Ph.D. in Remote Sensing from IIT (BHU) (1999), and did Postdoc in the microwave remote sensing of precipitation from Florida State University (2003-2005). He developed and operationalized many satellite based geophysical parameters retrieval algorithms and meteorological services. He is Deputy Project Director for ISRO’s Oceansat-3 and INSAT-3DR/3DS missions. He represents ISRO in many international forums such as CEOS, CGMS and GSICS. He published more than 100 peer-reviewed research papers. He received NASA Group Achievement Award (2015) for GPM, ASI-ISRO Award (2013) in “Space Science and Applications”, and ISRO Team Excellence Awards (2009 & 2011) for Oceansat-2 and Megha-Tropiques missions. He is an elected Fellow of Royal Meteorological Society, London.
